Where is the environment and what do people do there?

Time needed: 5 minutes

Why do it: Many students understand “the environment” as something that only exists in the wilderness. They may also think of what people “do” there as limited to recreational sports. This quick teaching tool challenges this view and shares the definition of the environment used by the environmental justice movement. It is meant to help students see “the environment” everywhere, and therefore have a stronger foundation for understanding the relationship between the environment and human health and well-being.

Materials

  • Photos — see download section below.
  • Projector, printouts, or other way to show the photos to your class one at a time.

Directions

  1. Tell the group to raise their hands when they see photos of the environment.
  2. Show photos one at a time, giving a few moments for students to raise their hands or not in response to each photo.
  3. After showing all the photos, reflect briefly on the class consensus on which photos depicted the environment. If most students raised their hands only for the wilderness and recreational sports photos, note that this understanding reflects the mainstream view of the environment in the USA, but that the environmental justice movement sees the environment differently. If students raised their hands for all photos, note that this understanding reflects the environmental justice movement’s view of the environment, but that often people only see the environment as something that exists only in the wilderness.
  4. Share the definition of the environment used in the environmental justice movement: the places where we live, work, play and learn.

  • Substitute or add photos from your community to personalize the lesson for students.

¿Dónde está el ambiente y qué hace allí la gente?

Justificación: Para muchos estudiantes, "el ambiente" es algo que identifican únicamente con las áreas silvestres. Es posible que también piensen que los deportes recreativos son las únicas actividades que la gente realiza en esas áreas. Esta herramienta de enseñanza de corta duración, desafía ese punto de vista y comparte la definición del ambiente que utiliza el movimiento por la justicia ambiental. Instrucciones

  1. Pídale al grupo que levanten la mano cuando vean fotos del ambiente.
  2. Muestre las fotos de una en una, dando tiempo a los estudiantes para que levanten la mano o no en respuesta a cada foto.
  3. Después de mostrar todas las fotos, reflexione brevemente sobre las fotos que, en opinión de su clase, representaron el ambiente. Si la mayoría de los estudiantes levantó la mano sólo cuando mostró fotos de áreas silvestres y deportes recreativos, tenga en cuenta que esta interpretación refleja la opinión dominante en los Estados Unidos sobre el ambiente, la cual difiere de la forma en que el movimiento por la justicia ambiental ve al ambiente. Si los estudiantes levantaron la mano ante todas las fotos, tenga en cuenta que esta interpretación refleja la opinión del movimiento por la justicia ambiental sobre el ambiente, pero que este es visto por la gente con frecuencia como algo relacionado únicamente con las áreas silvestres.
  4. Comparta la definición del ambiente que utiliza el movimiento por la justicia ambiental: los lugares donde vivimos, trabajamos, jugamos y aprendemos.

Adaptaciones

  • Sustituya fotos o añada algunas de su comunidad con las que los estudiantes se sientan más identificados.
