25 STORIES FROM THE CENTRAL VALLEY uses photos, theater, stories and sound to paint a vivid picture of the environmental toxins that “the other California” lives with every day. Women leaders give us a window into the little-known lives of people who are making this region safer for everyone. Their stories are shocking, sad, and inspiring. This project began as a series of oral history interviews conducted in 2007–2008. Tracy Perkins designed them to serve two purposes: to provide data for her master’s thesis and to collect and share the stories of the women leaders of California’s environmental justice movement. Professor Julie Sze collaborated in developing this work into a multi-media project that features excerpts from the interviews as well as photography and theater. Teaching tools were created to bring the knowledge from these diverse forms back into the classroom.
This work is indebted to the expertise of students, staff and faculty at UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz, activists from the San Joaquin Valley, and actors, interpreters and friends from the San Francisco Bay Area. Much of their work was done on a volunteer or part-volunteer basis. Their efforts pay tribute to the Central Valley environmental justice movement and the possibilities for a cleaner, safer, more beautiful home state for us all.

Este proyecto comenzó como una serie de entrevistas de historias orales realizadas entre 2007 y 2008. Tracy Perkins las diseñó para cumplir con dos propósitos: obtener datos para su tesis de maestría, y para recopilar y compartir las historias de las líderes del movimiento de justicia ambiental en California. La profesora Julie Sze prestó su colaboración para convertir esta obra en un proyecto multimedia que resalta pasajes de las entrevistas e incorpora fotografías y teatro. También se diseñaron herramientas de enseñanza para compartir los conocimientos de esta diversidad de formas en el aula.
Este trabajo fue posible gracias a la experiencia aportada por los estudiantes y el personal administrativo y docente de UC Davis y UC Santa Cruz, los activistas del Valle de San Joaquín, los actores, intérpretes y amigos del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco. Sus aportes fueron en gran medida voluntarios o parcialmente voluntarios. Sus esfuerzos sirven de homenaje al movimiento de la justicia ambiental del Valle Central y a la posibilidad de una California más limpia, segura y bella para todos.
